What on Earth is a landscape photographer doing on a writing website?

Hi, my name is Dylan and I’m a software test engineer professionally with a tangentially related educational background in aerospace engineering. Those two things tend to imply that I’m not very good at writing, and if you assumed that then you’d be correct. The primary reason I’m starting this substack endeavor is because I enjoy taking photos of landscapes in my free time. As I begin diving deeper into hiking and backpacking for these images, I would like to give them more context as well as better document them for my future self to look back upon. Instagram doesn’t quite fulfill this for me and I’m currently too lazy to add a blog element to my mediocre website, so this will have to do for now.

I figure that I will document my adventures as they come and maybe even recount some of my past highlights as best as I can. I will most likely focus primarily on the noteworthy aspects of my travels, as well as explain the reasoning behind some of my photos and why I found them worth taking. I don’t plan on focusing much on the technical side of things as far as camera settings go, but if it’s something interesting to you I can add some of that in the future. The same can be said for gear, whether it be hiking gear or photo gear, if it’s something you would like to know about please let me know or message me and ask directly. Maybe I will do a write up that specifically lists all of the stuff that I use and why somewhere down the line.

In the meantime, I’m working on a write up of a recent winter hike to Sky Pond in Rocky Mountain National Park. My fiancée will hopefully assist me with a lot of the editing and grammar side of things. In the long term I am hoping to become better at writing in general and treat this as yet another creative output for me to learn and grow just as I have done with photography.
